Description
A cult hill corresponding to the Mežīte hillfort located near the hillfort. Nowadays both objects are separated by an asphalted highway, but in former times, most probably, the road was elsewhere, it is presumed – closer to the hill fort. The Idols’ Hill is a large, up to 25 m high hill massive overgrown with dense forest. It has steep slopes and large, natural, quite even surface.
Narrative
There is a tale about the hill that an underground passage leads from it to the hillfort (in reality it is hardly possible). The Mežīte Hillort is one of the visually most beautiful hillforts of Kurzeme that should be visited by every person interested in the ancient times of Latvia. It is interesting that the same idea was expressed already in 1869 by a Baltic German priest, researcher of the Latvian ancient history and folklore August Bielenstein who, while describing the Mežīte hillfort, among other things noted, “Anyone who wants to get an idea about the past of the Latvians should visit this site.”
