Description
State archaeological heritage (State Inspection for Heritage Protection, No 2430). The meaning of the word “Piltiņkalns” is related to a castle, an ancient dwelling place. In Latvia there are several Piltiņkalns. Some of these hills are called church hills that point at their relation to ancient cult sites, because the word “church” denotes not only a Christian temple, but also ancient pagan shrines. The Piltiņkalns Hill Cult Site is situated about 2 km south-east of the Dauguļi homestead, 500 m south-east of the Rības homestead. The monument consists of two separate mounds overgrown with forest that stand out well in the surroundings. They are about 25 m high, with their own sides, have not been artificially worked up. The mounds are separated by a valley with deepenings at the end that are called the Holy Ditches (Holy Mārciņš, Ciba Ditch (Svētais Mārciņš, Cibas dīķis)). Both on the mounds and in the valley one can see rather large burnt granite stones. At the north foot, there used to be a cemetery, but at the south foot – the Rožkalni Ancient Burial Ground. At the Mazdzelzskalni homestead a sacrificial stone was situated. It is assumed that this was a cult centre for wider surroundings. No cultural layer. (J. Urtāns. Archaeological Monuments in Valmiera District (Arheoloģijas pieminekļi Valmieras rajonā). 1991) Other object nearby: the Augstroze Hill Fort, the Augstroze Lake.
